Water softening salt is used to prevent the build up of limescale in industrial boilers and needs to be of high purity to prevent the build up of sediment deposits within the boiler system that can result from the use of lower quality product.

Water chlorination and disinfection is achieved by the electrolytic conversion of dissolved salt into sodium hypochlorite, which is then added to the water supply prior to supply to the public.
